Description, Habitat and Distribution | |
Botanical Description |
Annual herbaceous plant, 20-60 cm tall, covered with soft bristles. Stems arising from a shallow taproot, erect, unbranched or bearing a few lateral, procumbent, slender branches. Basal leaves forming a rosette, petiolate, lanceolate, 5-18 × 1-3 cm, with an acute to acuminate apex and dentate to sharply lobed margins, occasionally nearly entire. Cauline leaves progressively smaller towards the top of the stem, with a sagittate, stem-clasping base, and usually covered with long, soft, whitish bristles.
Inflorescence a loose corymb, with flower buds held erect. Involucre cylindrical, composed of 7-14 narrowly lanceolate phyllaries about 5 mm long, green with a hyaline margin and a beige apex, the outer surface covered with long bristles and stipitate glands. Ray florets golden yellow, amber towards the base, with a reddish-brown apex (sometimes appearing as a central brown disc in young flower heads), about 10 mm long.
Achenes copper-brown, elliptic-cylindrical, about 2 mm long, with 8-10 longitudinal ribs and a narrowed apex bearing a tuft of white, feathery pappus bristles 3-4 mm long. The species is highly variable in both its indumentum and leaf shape. (by Stephen Mifsud) | |
