Name Derivation :

Delphinium: The name is derived from the resemblance of the bud or flower to the head of a miniature dolphin (=delphinus). (Latin origin )

Remarks :

"This species was misapplied under the name of Consolida orientalis (= Delphinium orientalis) in many old floras e.g. ""Flora Orientalis"" (Boissier 1867), ""Flore de l’Afrique du Nord"" (Maire 1952), ""Flora of Turkey and the East Aegean Islands"" (Davis 1965), etc. according to the revision by DuPasquier et al. Description, Habitat and Distribution
Habitat in Europe: Arable land and other dry, open habitats.
Preferred habitat in Malta: Harvested or fallow fields
Botanical Description: Stem up to 100 cm, simple or branched. Basal leaves with linear-oblong segments; cauline with linear segments. Inflorescence racemose; lower bracts dissected; bracteoles usually close to, and reaching beyond, base of flower. Lower pedicels usually more than 12 mm in fruit, up to twice as long as spur. Perianth-segments 10-14(-20) mm, purplish-violet; spur (8-)10-12 mm. Nectary 3-lobed, with bifid upper lobe. Follicle 15-20 × 5 mm, gibbous above, very abruptly contracted at apex, with beak c. 1 mm; seeds reddish-brown.
Chromosome number: 2n=16
Distributional range: N, C. & E. Spain; S.E. Europe; locally naturalized elsewhere.
