Name Derivation :

Muscari: Greek word for musk - a greasy secretion with a strong fragrant odour, produced in a glandular sac beneath the skin of the abdomen of the male musk deer and used in the manufacture of perfumes. Flowers of many species of this genus have this scent. (Greek origin )
commutatum: meaning changed or altered but in taxonomy it is often used for a species that is quite variable and was previously included in another species and have been described as a new and different species. In other words it was previously included in another species. (Latin origin )

Description, Habitat and Distribution
Habitat in Europe: Data will be available in the next update of this website.
Preferred habitat in Malta: Garigue rich in soil, rocky ground, cultivated fields and waste places.
Botanical Description: Bulbs occasionally producing offsets; tunic dark shiny brown. Leaves 2-5, 10-30 cm x 5-15 mm, linear to linear-lanceolate, with a minute scarious margin, canaliculate. Scape 6-30 cm, about as long as leaves. Raceme dense, ovoid. Pedicels of fertile flowers 2-6 mm, patent-deflexed, as long as or shorter than flowers. Fertile flowers 3.5-7 mm, obovoid-urceolate, strongly shouldered and constricted, deep blackish-violet, with recurved concolorous teeth; teeth 0.5-1 mm. Pedicels of sterile flowers 1-3 mm. Sterile flowers 2-4 mm, paler and smaller than the fertile. Fruiting raceme lax. Capsule 7-12 x 5-8 mm, oblong-ovoid or broadly ellipsoid.
Chromosome number: 2n=18
Distributional range: Mediterranean region, westwards to W. Italy.
