Taxonomical Classification: Animalia / Arthropoda / Insecta / Blattodea / Corydiidae |
Egyptian Sand Roach, Egyptian Desert Roach Wirdiena Sewda |
Further Information: As its name suggests, this cockroach prefers to live in sandy habitats, burrowing beneath the surface during the day. For this reason, this cockroach is very rarely found inside houses. Males (shown below) are winged and somewhat slender, but females look rather different as they are wingless and rotund. Males are known as 'patri' (monk) in Maltese, while females are referred to as 'soru' (nun).
This species prefers to eat grain, cereals and other plant matter. Nocturnal. |
