Mottled Shore Crab Maltese name not known |
Further Information: This species of crab was recently discovered from Xatt l-Ahmar, Gozo (Maltese islands). It is an alien crab from tropical and subtropical Atlantic and is very similar to the Mediterranean native crab - Pachygrapsus marmoratus. The difference is mainly based on the number of lateral spines at the carpace. It is rather rare in the Mediterranean, but locally frequent at the Eastern part (Israel, Jordan, Eygpt, etc.). From the three species of Pachygraspus recorded in Malta (P. marmoratus and P. maurus being the other two) , this is the rarest, so far recorded from Gozo and Comino. More information about these crabs can be found on this issue of the Observer (Gozo) |
