Name Derivation :

Aloe: A very old name which seems to originate from the Arabic 'alloeh' or the Hebrew 'allal', both meaning bitter. Some sources also include the Greek word 'alsos', similarly referring to the bitter juice of the plant, but the arabic name was used earlier. (Arabic origin )
arborescens: Tending to be woody or having the form of a tree. (Latin origin )

Planting in rural areas :

Cannot be planted in the wild (rural areas) since the species may be invasive (see ERA guidelines)

Remarks :

According to the formula of Fr. Romano Zago, a mixture of blended leaves and honey is of great curative strength for many ailments. One teaspoon three times a day is enough for many cures. Info provided by Rev. Father Jim Morris. More info [here]


Description, Habitat and Distribution
Habitat in Europe: Naturalized from gardens on rocks, mostly near the sea
Preferred habitat in Malta: Cultivated plant sometimes a few escapee are present near the site of cultivation. Not invasive
Botanical Description: Freely-branched shrub with erect to spreading stems 1.5-3.5 m, up to 30 cm in diameter. Leaves 50-60 x 5-7 cm, dull greyish-green, patent or somewhat deflexed, crowded in terminal rosettes, the dead leaves persistent for c. 50 cm below the rosette; surface smooth, without spots; marginal teeth scarcely spinose, forwardly curved, greenish. Inflorescence c. 80 cm, simple or with one short branch. Raceme 20-30 x 10-12 cm; bracts 15-20 mm, greenish; pedicels 35-40 mm. Perianth 35-40 mm, scarlet; segments free. Stamens exceeding perianth by 3-5 mm. Naturalized
