Description, Habitat and Distribution
Habitat in Europe: Mainly on cultivated or disturbed soil.
Preferred habitat in Malta: Wasteground, ruderal areas near arable land, field margins, abandone fields and farms, parks, gardens, and many similar sites with enough soil
Botanical Description: Annual 5-60(-80) cm, clear green; monoecious. Leaves 1-4(-6) cm, ovate, rounded to cuneate at base, usually deeply serrate; petiole as long as the lamina; stipules 4 at each node. Racemes not more than 2 cm, usually not longer than the subtending petiole, appearing as few-flowered axillary clusters, with numerous female and few male flowers, erecto-patent in fruit. Perianth-segments of female flowers ciliate on the margin, glabrous or sparsely hispid on the back.
Chromosome number: 2n=24, 26, 52
Distributional range: Throughout Europe, but doubtfully native in much of the north.
