Name Derivation :

Neotinea: literally meaning New and Tineo alluding to a new genus of orchids dedicated to the Sicilian botanist Vincenzo Tineo (1791-1856). (Greek origin )
maculata: From the Latin word 'macula' meaning stained or spotted. (Latin origin )

Remarks :

This species was recorded from Malta and reported in old literature but has not been seen anymore in the wild for about a hundred years. If you think that you have seen this species in the wild from Malta, please email here and provide all details possible and ideally images.
