Name Derivation :

Geranium: From the Greek 'geranos' = a crane, referring to the slender long-beaked fruit. (Greek origin )
purpureum: having a deep purple colour (usually referring to the flowers). (Latin origin ) 2 = Might be referring to the deep purple flowers, but since many species of Geranium are purple, it may refer to the fact that young plants tend to have a reddish-purple colour.

Description, Habitat and Distribution

Preferred habitat in Malta: Valleys, shady or humid places.
Botanical Description: Same as Geranium robertianum but sepals ovate, mucronate or shortly aristate; petals 5-9 mm, purplish-pink, with limb 3-5 mm, elliptic-oblong, longer than broad, and contracted less abruptly to a relatively broader claw; pollen yellow; mericarps usually glabrous, with about 4 strong, transverse ridges near the apex, and covered elsewhere by a close reticulum of lower but conspicuous ridges.
Chromosome number: 2n=32
Distributional range: S. & W. Europe, northwards to 52° N. in Britain.
