Description, Habitat and Distribution
Habitat in Europe: Dry places (damp or moist in S. Europe)
Preferred habitat in Malta: Data will be available in the next update of this website.
Botanical Description: Slender plants usually with weakly scabrid stems. Roots blackish-brown. Basal sheaths on stems brown, becoming blackish. Leaves with suborbicular or triangular, obtuse ligule which is about as wide as long. Spikes 4-7, crowded (or the lowest slightly remote) into a dense, ovoid inflorescence 2-3(-4) cm. Female glumes pale brown, similar in colour to or paler than, and almost as long as the utricles. Utricles 3-3.5 mm, ovate, less than twice as long as wide, truncate at base, scarcely flanged at the margin, erecto-patent, rather abruptly narrowed into beak.
