Remarks :

Recentely reported as a neophyte from Malta (see paper in links below) but possibly occurring in Nalta for a much longer time and simply neglected with the widespread Lemna minor, of whch difference is a minimal to the naked eye unless plants are not studied carefully.


Description, Habitat and Distribution
Habitat in Europe: Naturalized in several localities in warmer parts of Europe.
Preferred habitat in Malta: Flooded areas, namely open reservoirs, stagnant water bodies in valleys, temporary ponds. Nitrophilous plant hence often present in water polluted from nitrate leeching.
Botanical Description: Fronds 2-6 mm, floating, opaque, frequently very asymmetrical, oblong or falcate, rounded at the apex, entire, more or less flat and light green on both surfaces, obscurely 1-veined. 2n = 40.
Chromosome number: 2n=40
Distributional range: Originally reported from S.W. France (Lac Marion, near Biarritz)
Native region outside Europe: South America and southern parts of North America
