Remarks :

The taxon Allium melitense previously assumed to be an endemic species for the Maltese Islands, was found to correspond to small forms or ecotypes within the range of A. polyanthum from a study conducted by Stephen Mifsud and Owen Mifsud in 2018. Some authors lump several closely related species with A. ampeloprasum, which is here considered too much excesive for distinct species like A. polyanthum. A. babingtonii and A. porrum. Allium polyanthum was recently reported from Malta after a study on a section of the genus Allium by Stephen Mifsud and Owen Mifsud in 2018. In the past it most of the populations was thought to be A. commutatum and the endemic Allium melitense but the latter was synonymised with A. polyanthum, and the former is very rare in Malta and only two population are known to exist according to the study mentioned above.
