Name Derivation :

Amaranthus: From the Greek 'amarantos' meaning unfading. The flowers of several species have a deep purple-red colour (from which the colour amaranth is derived) which retain the colour for a very long time. (Greek origin )
hybridus: related or originating from a hybrid, hence a species from two genetically-mixed parents. (Latin origin )

Description, Habitat and Distribution
Habitat in Europe: Several anthropogenic habitats, esp. close to agricultural areas and abandoned fields
Preferred habitat in Malta: Fields and valleys close to agricultural areas, usually in disturbed places
Botanical Description: Stems 20-100 cm, erect, sparsely to densely pubescent above. Leaves 3-8 cm, rhombic-ovate. Inflorescence elongate-spicate, often compound, with long branches. Bracteoles (2-)3-4 mm, ovate, with a very long mucro, about twice as long as the perianth. Perianth-segments 5, 1.5-2(-2.4) mm, narrowly ovate, usually acute, about as long as the fruit. Stamens 5. Fruit dehiscing transversely.
Chromosome number: 2n=32
Distributional range: Naturalized in C. & S. Europe casual throughout most of Europe.
Native region outside Europe: (C. & W. North America.)
